Aside from the two cuss words at the beginning, it's an awesome video. Next US Drift event is January 9th @ PIR.

QUOTE (Dan_M @ Jan 25 2005, 11:17 PM) Is the lincoln a rental Seethe look on their face when you return their car and the two rear tires are trash The guy driving the Lincoln was Chris Cook, a former Bondurant guy who recently signed a deal to do the roadcourse events for a Nextel Cup team! He shredded the rear tires in 2 sessions.. I don't know if it was a rental or not, wouldn't be suprised. -------------------- Brady Dohrmann

QUOTE (s13champa @ Jan 22 2005, 09:36 AM) Very nice. I'm starting to like this drifting thing. It's a fun way to go crazy, legally of course. Was that Brady's 350Z? Is there some reason the 240 is a popular car for drifting? Is it light or naturally tail happy? -------------------- Matt Francis

QUOTE (mpfstew @ Jan 26 2005, 07:33 AM) Is there some reason the 240 is a popular car for drifting? Is it light or naturally tail happy? They're extremely easy to drive in a drift (linear steering, throttle, brakes), parts are cheap, cars are cheap, slow steering, lots of torque, you can fit huge wheels under the fenders, they're light, SR20DET motors make ~300hp with very little mods, the front is heavy and the back is light, easy to toss the car around.. it's a perfect platform for drifting. And when you think about it, there aren't many other Japanese cars that would fit the bill. RX7 - most people are terrified of rotaries. Corolla - supposed to be a good platform, but they make like 100hp stock.. takes A LOT of money to make one of those things drift well. Old Z - Heavy, expensive. Supra - even heavier, expensive. Miata - too short. Anything else is very expensive. You do see G35s, 350Zs, S2000s, RX8s running the professional series, but most "amateurs" can't afford to thrash a ride like that. You can't beat the power:weight:cost ratio of a 240SX, plain and simple.. it just turns out that the steering and chassis fit well for drifting. And I don't know who's Z that was in the video. -------------------- Brady Dohrmann

Why don't many people do drifting in pony cars? They seem to fit all the same requirements as the 240's you listed above, and you can get a fox-body Mustang for dirt cheap, they make good power, and should be able to get tail happy quite easily, even bone stock.
Yet, I almost never see one (I did notice the ex-Bondurant Mustang in that video) in US drifting (the little I've actually seen). Is it a sport that is somehow tied into the 'import' crowd primarily, and the pony car guys stay away just because of stigma? -------------------- Brian Weikert

This whole trend came from Japan, so naturally Japanese cars are portrayed as being the best for the sport, just as American cars are favored for drag racing in the USA. In a way they (imports) are better because it's really hard to toss around a heavy Mustang or Camaro, as is a 350Z or newer Supra. Smaller cars with longer wheelbases tend to do the best. Rhys Millen runs a Pontiac GTO in the SCCA Formula D drift series.. you can tell that compared to the smaller Silvias, RX7s and Corollas, he's working a lot harder to keep that thing moving and switch back and forth in tight turns.. the GTO is just heavy and slow turning. People have run Camaros, Mustangs, Pontiacs and even Crown Victorias.. they work since they have a ton of torque, but it's really hard to keep up with smaller, quicker Japanese cars. Given the same power/weight ratio, a Miata would still be a better AutoX car than say a 350Z.. same thing. But to answer your question, any pony car will drift just fine, probably better out of the box than most Japanese cars.
Pontiac, Dodge and Ford all have factory backed cars in the Formula D drift series. If I remember correctly, Dodge's driver in the new Viper Competition Coupe won several events and maybe even the whole series last year. There was talk of putting a ban on that car since it's not really a street car, but it's probably because he was kicking everyone's ass. Bottom line is it's an import trend and people are stuck with a certain image.. it's not "cool" to have a Mustang in the opinion of many, even though it may be a better car. And it seems like most american car enthusiasts think drifting is dumb, so a line has been drawn... -------------------- Brady Dohrmann

Brady, in Japan isn't the Skyline a popular drifting car??? I don't know how much they weigh, but the power/weight ratio is probably good, especially with $$$ and mods...

One of the better drivers in the D1 Grand Prix series runs an R34 GT-T 4-Door, it looks pretty cool out there. GTRs are AWD and while a few people try them, they're not as good as a RWD version. -------------------- Brady Dohrmann

DOH, I forgot the GTR is AWD. There some people on the Subaru boards that are going to convert an STI to RWD and drift it!
